JAKE LA BOTZ - They're Coming For Me

August 27, 2019

As a hard-luck kid wandering the streets of Chicago, young Jake La Botz chased
the magic he found in stories. He volunteered in theatres as a boy to get closer
to the stage, he haunted Chicago libraries picking up books and records, and he
busked in the subway, learning from elder blues legends like Honeyboy Edwards
and Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis who took him under their wing. All of this set
him up for a life of storytelling, in streets, subways, juke joints, and eventually on
the big screen and stages around the world. A noted film and stage actor, La Botz
approaches music with an ear for the unusual, a knack for speaking for the fragile
characters and half-mad sages he encounters on his own travels. His new album,
They’re Coming For Me (out October 18 on Hi-Style Records), is a collection of tall
tales and strange stories ranging in subject from a magic comb that can save the
world, to a bank robber who moans gospel hymns, and a confessional from Bigfoot
himself. The eclectic subject matter reflects La Botz’s own wide-ranging interests
and unconventional career arc. He’s experienced the highest highs and lowest lows
of life, and his own story is so unbelievable that it’s currently being adapted by La
Botz and actor/writer Ian Barford as a stage musical for Steppenwolf Theatre!
Some of these highs and lows saw La Botz racing across the Midwest in stolen
cars, finding refuge in the early 80’s punk scene, touring tattoo parlors for years
because his music doesn’t fit in noisy bars, playing guitar in an all-Black church in
LA, educating himself in public libraries, acting in Hollywood movies, and, most
important, kicking a years-long drug addiction.
Jake La Botz is living in Nashville now, writing music and finding a place to rest
from the road. He’s a man that exudes calm in the heart of a hurricane, but this calm
is hard won. He turned to meditation after kicking heroin twenty years ago, and
teaches meditation now at home and in prisons, trying to give a little back. “I think
this happens for people,” La Botz says, “when things get really rough. There could be
a possibility of meeting life in a new way. For me meditation keeps that door open. It
infuses my relationships, my music, any creative thing; it has this quality of opening
the space and making experience, making life more available.” Experience is the key
word here. It’s what he was chasing as a kid on the road, it’s what he’s looking for
now, and it infuses every part of his new album.
To record They’re Coming For Me, La Botz returned to Chicago with his old friend
Jimmy Sutton, of Hi-Style Records and JD McPherson’s band. At Jimmy’s studios
in Chicago, the two worked to meld Sutton’s background in the vintage sounds of
American roots music with La Botz’s natural inclinations towards country blues,
gospel, 60s pop, and 70s rock n roll. “I’m of the school where you make a record in
one day because you don’t have money for more than that!” La Botz says. “There
was a lot of learning for both of us in our first record (2017’s Sunnyside). We learned
to really appreciate and work together. This one was a lot easier for us, we took our
time with it, and we were much more sympatico. If he had an idea, I was able to
catch on right away.” The result is an album that seems torn between the sacred and
the profane, high art and low art, the dichotomy at the heart of all American music.
But Jake La Botz brushes that idea away, saying simply “In my opinion sacred and
profane are misnomers. Everything is sacred.”

Wolverhampton, UK's DEARIST Debut New Video ("Colours") on The Noise

January 01, 2020

Sophomore LP 'Sonder' Available Everywhere Now

Wolverhampton, UK rockers Dearist are debuting their new video "Colours" on The Noise!

Lyrically, the track deals with a random and devasting event that shook the lives of frontman Adam Binder and his wife. Binder explains:

"The lyrical content is quite dark, I don't think I've spoken before about what this is about, but I will. Basically a few years ago I saw my then girlfriend (now wife) get hit by a car and I think about the things that happened that day often and how lucky she is. But its inspired by how she must have felt as she lay there in the road waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Its not specifically about her on that day, but more about anyone that has been through an experience like that."

"Colours" appears on the band's sophomore LP 'Sonder,' out everywhere now via Spartan Records.

One year ago today, the all-female, singer-songwriter collective Song Suffragettes released the original song and music video for “Time’s Up”, a musical nod to the female empowerment movement that began in January of 2018. In celebration of this anniversary, Song Suffragettes just released “'Time’s Up’ – The Story Behind The Song” via their YouTube page which has amassed over 2.6 million views to date.

Written by Kalie Shorr and Lacy Green, the song features the voices of 23 Song Suffragettes and pointedly addresses gender inequality and sexual misconduct against women with sharp lyrics like “we aren’t waiting anymore for the moon to turn the tides”. LAW TAKES LISTENERS THERE AND BACK AGAIN FOR BRADLEY’S HOUSE

November 20, 2018

ALBUM RELEASE SET FOR NOVEMBER 23

Over 2 decades after the death of his father Bradley Nowell (Sublime), 23-year-old Jakob Nowell is poised to release the debut album from his band, LAW. Recorded by Eagles of Death Metal guitarist, Dave Catching, There and Back Again  represents LAW’s sonic journey captured within the walls of the renown Rancho De La Luna recording studio, which was prominently featured in Dave Grohl's Sonic Highways documentary series.

LAW is a 4-piece rock band out of Long Beach, CA featuring vocalist Jakob Nowell and bandmates Nick Aguilar (drums), Aidan Palacios (guitar) and Logun Spellacy (bass). The foursome, all in their early twenties, trekked  to Joshua Tree, CA and holed up at the infamous Rancho La Luna for inspiration. The sessions yielded 13 songs, which were mixed and mastered by Michael "Mic Dangerously" De La Torre at 17th Street Recording Studios in Costa Mesa, CA.

LAW draws their sound from a wide range of rock bands such as Tool, Primus, Rush, Queens of the Stone Age, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction to name a few of the group's mainstream influences. The band plans to release its full-length LP There and Back Again on Black Friday, November 23, 2018.

The band’s first single “Cold,” made its debut on October 12th, followed by the band’s performance at the massive Aftershock festival.  The video for the single was debuted via Consequence of Sound/Heavy Consequence, with the publication noting "The young act’s musicality and Jakob’s vocal stylings on “Cold” immediately call to mind the hit-making vibe of his father’s famous band, as LAW put their own spin on the ska–infused rock that propelled Sublime to sell millions of albums in the ’90s."

To support the release, LAW embarks on a run of upcoming live shows including a special Record Store Day acoustic appearance, Live Q&A,  and album signing November 23 at their local hang Fingerprints Records in Long Beach, CA.

Law will also appear this Saturday, November 24 at Gaslamp in downtown Long Beach to benefit The Nowell Family Foundation’s ‘Bradley’s House,’ set up in memory of Jakob’s father, in an effort to provide addiction recovery services to the music community. The foundation is raising funds presently to finish the building of ‘Bradley’s House’, a recovery facility that will provide education and treatment for addiction recovery, regardless of financial situation.  Proceeds from the upcoming LAW shows will benefit Bradley’s House.
