Austin, TX-based artist David Ramirez will join Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Paul Simon, Bonnie Raitt, and more for “A Night For Austin,” a benefit concert to aid those in Austin who have been affected during the COVID-19 pandemic. The two-hour event premieres tonight at 8pm CT and will be televised locally on CBS Austin (KEYE) as well as available for viewing via live stream HERE. Produced by Luck Productions, the event will allow viewers to make donations virtually, with all proceeds benefiting the Austin Community Foundation’s Fund, which will help MusiCares Austin, People Fund, Central Texas Food Bank, Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, and other local charities currently providing pandemic-related assistance to the Austin community. Ramirez recently announced his forthcoming new album, My Love Is A Hurricane, set to release July 17 via Sweetworld Records / Thirty Tigers. For the introspective 10-song set, he teamed up with Dallas producer Jason Burt (Leon Bridges, Sarah Jaffe, Paul Cauthen) to layer his widely acclaimed vocals atop "misty psychedelic undertones and potent gospel arrangements" (NPR Music). Ramirez released the album’s title track digitally last month, and he is sharing a live video for the song today, which can be viewed HERE.
My Love Is A Hurricane, Ramirez’s fifth full-length record and eighth collection of songs, follows 2017’s We’re Not Going Anywhere, which reflected on life in contemporary America through the lens of his own Mexican heritage with a sound influenced by ‘80s bands like The Cars and Journey. The soundscapes utilized on My Love Is A Hurricane are unlike those of any recording he has previously crafted, but at the heart of the record remains the same “powerful voice and perceptive pen” (Austin Chronicle). The new music builds upon critically acclaimed songwriting that has gained such praise from NPR Music as, “It's not easy for a writer to maintain the aura of the unspoken in a song...David Ramirez does so beautifully;” and “mesmerizing” (Wall Street Journal) vocals that have previously been described by Stereogum as “a voice like a tall tale, one minute strong and thick, the next threadbare and careworn,” with The New York Times adding, “Mr. Ramirez is a resolutely hesitant singer, never pushing his hurt, letting it instead decay him from within.”
